Welcome to my ‘Run By Common Sense’ which will help you on the road to achieve your running goals. I started running as a youngster in my native Great Britain, firstly competing in cross country and track, and then graduating to the marathon distance where I placed 4th twice at the Olympic Games. Throughout my career I was lucky to have great mentoring by 2 running coach legends - NCAA championship coach Bill Bergan and Olympic Master Coach George Gandy of Loughborough University. Having spent 16 years in the top echelons of the running world there isn’t much I haven’t seen or done myself. Luckily I avoided many of the pitfalls of running by developing excellent protocols and methodical training habits that became my signature as an athlete. Some runners had more natural talent than myself, but the application of sound training principles in the long run outweighs raw ability.
For many years I have mentored and advised runners and their coaches who have sought my knowledge and experience in all aspects of running training and race preparation. Whether they be fellow Olympians or recreational runners my advice would be the same - ‘Use Common Sense!’ Running is a very simple activity that needn’t be problematic if good principles are developed early and rigourously ingrained as habit. I have seen endless numbers of talented runners underachieve due to poor basic methods and lack of common sense principles.
My goal as a coach is to educate runners so they can become self sufficient and independent; giving the runner the tools and knowledge to go away and achieve a life long quality to their running.
